Rep. Turner: Dems Want to 'Justify' Selves Through Mueller

By    |   Friday, 19 July 2019 03:24 PM

House Democrats' "whole goal" behind questioning former special counsel Robert Mueller on July 24 is to justify their own behavior when it comes to investigating President Donald Trump, Rep. Mike Turner said Friday.

"They don't like the conclusions that there was no conspiracy, no coordination with Russia, not just with the president, but with no Americans," the Ohio Republican said on Fox News' "Outnumbered Overtime." "They want to find that the investigation was insufficient. They didn't look at all of the evidence so they continue their investigations, continue to look for other evidence."

Mueller will testify before the House Judiciary Committee and the House Intelligence Committee, and Turner, on the Intelligence Committee, said it will be looking at Mueller's report and conclusions.'

"The Mueller team has said they were not thwarted, inhibited," said Turner. "They came to a conclusion, they issued their report. They were not obstructed."

Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., has said he fears Mueller is working with his staff to have some soundbites that will give Democrats "exactly what they want," and Turner said the former special counsel has had the opportunity already to backtrack on his statements.

"He certainly has made statements that are questionable," said Turner. "We certainly hope he doesn't do that. He has said he's going to stick to the report. This should be a testimony about the report. For him to go beyond that would be inappropriate."

Meanwhile, it's "funny" for Democrats on the committees to justify what they're doing with Mueller's testimony, said Turner.

"Remember, it's not as if this investigation is ongoing in the Judiciary and Intelligence committees here will stop after Mueller comes and speaks," said Turner. "They want to use his testimony to continue their investigation. With that goal, they cannot let it go."
