The Kremlin-linked "troll farm" that placed thousands of ads on Facebook in 2016 used Tumblr to push content supporting Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., criticizing former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, and highlighting issues black people face, but the blog site has not come under the same scrutiny as Twitter, Google, or Facebook, BuzzFeed reports.

Facebook and Twitter have emerged as a key parts of several congressional investigations into Russian influence in the election.

"The evidence we've collected shows a highly engaged and far-reaching Tumblr propaganda-op targeting mostly teenage and 20-something African Americans. This appears to have been part of an ongoing campaign since early 2015," said researcher Jonathan Albright, who worked with BuzzFeed News to uncover the findings.

The Internet Research Agency, based in St. Petersburg and also known as the Trolls from Olgino or kremlebots, employed hundreds of Russians to spread political messages during the U.S. presidential election and post positive information about Russia.

Many Tumblr accounts featured their matching Twitter accounts along with the same profile images, and cross-promoted content between platforms.

"I feel that there is a responsibility here for them to look into this more," Albright said of Tumblr. "Has not one person at this huge company taken a look at the [list of IRA Twitter accounts released to Congress] and said, 'Maybe we should cross reference user names on Tumblr?'"
