The Transportation Security Administration is testing cameras that are designed to detect hidden explosives and suicide vests, CBS News reported on Friday.

The cameras scan people that enter the transit system for dense items that are concealed under their clothes, according to CBS News.

"We're really looking for those alarm indicators… if we can encounter that person as they enter the station in the mezzanine, we can very, very quickly isolate them and move to the area where, if there is a threat, we can contain that much better," said Alex Wiggins, head of security for the transit authority in Los Angeles, where the camera is being tested, CBS News reported.

The cameras passively scan people walking by, and do not use radiation. "

There is no silver bullet, no technical silver bullet to prevent all acts of terrorism, but clearly as part of a layered defense… it can play a role in at least making it harder for the bad guys," said Frank Cilluffo, homeland security expert at George Washington University, the news network noted.

Another scanner being tested at a TSA facility outside Washington, D.C. scans people standing in it. Eventually, the TSA wants the scan to work while people walk through, without stopping, so that people "can just keep walking, so they don't even really notice they're being screened while they're doing it," Andy Lee, test and evaluation director at the TSA told CBS News.

"Along with industry partners, we are committed to identifying, testing and deploying technology that addresses threats to transportation across the spectrum," TSA administrator David Pekoske said in a statement, according to The Hill.
