A Justice Department under Donald Trump's administration could help along an FBI probe into the Clinton Foundation, according to CNN.

As his campaign wound down, the president-elect promised investigations, if he were elected, into the relationship between foundation donors and Clinton's government work. Investigators at the FBI's New York office have argued that they wanted to open a full probe.

Emails released by WikiLeaks may give the FBI investigators more to go on. Chelsea Clinton and Doug Band, who helped run the foundation, were in dispute over conflicts of interest in Bill Clinton's paid speeches, which led to an internal audit of the foundation. Band suggested that Chelsea used foundation money to pay for her wedding, CNN reports.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said Trump would have to make a decision about promises he made regarding a foundation probe.

"It's been a tradition in our politics to put things behind us. On the other hand, you have to look at how bad was it?" Giuliani said Thursday, according to CNN. "Because suppose somebody comes along a year from now and is alleged to have stolen $50,000 from a charity — and (Clinton) was never investigated for hundreds of millions."

FBI officials were told they did not have enough information to launch a full investigation, but were told they could continue to gather information and evidence and revisit their requests later, CNN reports.

The FBI's efforts are due, in part, to allegations in conservative writer Peter Schweizer's book "Clinton Cash," CNN reported.

Trump addressed the issue and the WikiLeaks emails at an October rally, saying, "Mr. Band called the arrangement unorthodox. The rest of us call it outright corrupt."

Using the emails to build probable cause for an investigation could be troublesome, because some of the emails are labeled "attorney-client privileged," so they have legal protection, CNN reports.

Also, the U.S. government has declared that Russian intelligence is behind the theft of the emails that led to WikiLeaks publishing them.

According to The Washington Post, the conservative media's interest in a foundation probe appears to be decreasing and now that Clinton is a private citizen, not a president with an agenda, "the potential reward just isn't as great."
