Donald Trump expressed his support for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie as the Bridge-gate trial has gotten under way.

The Republican presidential candidate's campaign provided a statement about Christie to The New York Times, saying:

"I have known and liked Chris for 15 years. After his recent run for president, he called me to say that he would like to endorse me in that he sees a movement like he has never seen before. I was greatly honored, accepted his endorsement, and he has been a spectacular advocate ever since."

Trump's statement did not mention the ongoing trial, in which a federal prosecutors told jurors a witness said Christie knew about the politically motivated lane closures near the George Washington bridge as they happened.

Christie was not charged in the case, and has said he knew nothing about the lane closures.

Trump's statement of support appears to be a reversal from when he was running against Christie for the Republican nomination in December 2015.

The Times reported that, at the time, Trump said he believed Christie knew about his aides calling for the lanes to be closed, saying, "He totally knew about it. They're with him all the time, the people that did it."

Usually, having an advisor to a presidential candidate involved in a trial could be damaging to a candidate, reports the Times.

"Conventional rules don't apply to Trump," political consultant Rob Stutzman said. "If anything, some of this may indicate that the vetting for vice president was a better process than maybe some would have imagined."

Christie has said Bridge-gate was a reason why Trump did not choose him as vice president.

Trump's decision to stand by a friend in the middle of a crisis has precedent, reports the Times. He said Roger Ailes did "an amazing job" at Fox News after the former executive's exit from the network over sexual harassment allegations.

According to The Atlantic, Christie is not allowed to run again for New Jersey governor once his term ends in 2018, and is angling for a position in a potential Trump administration.
