President-elect of the United States Donald Trump reportedly complimented the Prime Minister of Pakistan Wednesday, despite Trump repeatedly questioning their status as an ally in the past.

"You have a very good reputation. You are a terrific guy," Trump said to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, according to the Pakistan PM's Office, reported by CNN.

"You are doing amazing work which is visible in every way. I am looking forward to see you soon. As I am talking to you, Prime Minister, I feel I am talking to a person I have known for long."

The office of the president-elect released a statement saying the two "had a productive conversation about how the United States and Pakistan will have a strong working relationship in the future."

Trump's team did not respond to CNN's request for confirmation of the quote from the Prime Minister's office.

In 2011 and 2012, Trump tweeted about former al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, who was found hiding in Pakistan before being killed by U.S. Navy SEALs, saying "Pakistan is not our friend," and wondering when they'll apologize for giving bin Laden "safe sanctuary."

According to CNN's sources, phone calls between world leaders are often summarized in plain language that's very carefully chosen, and usually the calls themselves are fairly formal.

"A president wouldn't gush over a foreign leader the way that Donald Trump did. He wouldn't volunteer to do all these things," David Gergen, CNN political analyst and former adviser to four presidents, told CNN.

"Our relationship with Pakistan is one of the most sensitive and difficult relationships in the world. It's an extremely important relationship."

During that call, a president or president-elect would most likely have national security advisors and a press aide close by, Gergen added.

"You'd carefully think through any call like that, you'd make your two or three points, [then] over and out," he said. "Especially don't leave them in a position where they could put out something so gushing that it hurts your relationship with India."
