Sen. John Kennedy, a Louisiana Republican whose grilling of an underqualified judicial nominee last week led to the nominee withdrawing his name from consideration, was congratulated on his work over the weekend by President Donald Trump.

Kennedy told WWL-TV the president called him on Saturday after video of the exchange between him and Matthew S. Petersen, whom the White House had nominated to fill a seat on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Petersen is a member of the Federal Elections Commission, but admitted under questioning by Kennedy on Wednesday he has never handled a jury or bench trial. He also drew a blank when Kennedy asked him to define basic legal terms.

"I understand that the path that many successful district court judges have taken has been a different one than I've taken," Petersen said.

Petersen was widely ridiculed after video of the exchange went viral, and it was announced Monday that he had withdrawn his name from consideration.

Kennedy said Trump phoned him on Saturday and thanked him for what he did, noting that he had not personally reviewed the nominee and that his staff had sent it forward.

"The president and I get along fine, and he has told me, he said, 'Kennedy, when some of my guys send somebody over who's not qualified, you do your job,'" Kennedy told the station. "And I said, 'Thank you, Mr. President.' And I intend to do that.

"He doesn't interview these guys. He has a staff do it. And he said, 'Kennedy, I think you’re right.'"

Petersen, Kennedy said, is a "really smart" and "decent guy," but added, "just because you’ve seen 'My Cousin Vinny' doesn't qualify you to be a federal judge."
