President Donald Trump Monday said Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh has been "assaulted by lies and Fake News" through The New York Times and its report on a book discussing the justice's early life and claims of sexual assault during his college years, adding that the media giant "should be sued."
The one who is actually being assaulted is Justice Kavanaugh - Assaulted by lies and Fake News!" Trump said on Twitter. "This is all about the LameStream Media working with their partner, the Dems."
On Sunday, the Times
updated a weekend story about Kavanaugh to note that a woman cited as the victim of an alleged sexual assault by Kavanaugh is said to have no memory of the incident. The article was published based on a new book that discusses Kavanaugh's early life and claims that he'd assaulted a woman at a college party.
"DO YOU BELIEVE WHAT THESE HORRIBLE PEOPLE WILL DO OR SAY," Trump also tweeted, using all capital letters. "They are looking to destroy, and influence his opinions - but played the game badly. They should be sued!"
Trump further quoted Fox News contributor and former Secret Service agent Dan Bongino in a third tweet, noting that during Bongino's appearance on Fox News' "Fox and Friends," he'd called the continuing claims against Kavanaugh a "disgrace."
"'This guy [Kavanaugh] is not a good man, he is a great man,'" Trump quoted Bongino as saying "'He has to go to his church with his family while these terrible reports are being written about him'"
The initial Times article led several 2020 Democratic presidential candidates to call for Kavanaugh's resignation or impeachment.
