President Donald Trump will sign an executive order Thursday asking for an investigation by the Commerce Department into whether imports of foreign-made steel are hurting national security, Politico reports.
The move is another of Trump's "America's First" policies he pushed during the campaign trail. One official told CNBC there was a concern of foreign-made steel hampering the domestic industry's ability "to maintain production and maintain the expertise necessary for these high national security-concerned products, specific alloys and so forth."
The proposed order would direct Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross to investigate whether foreign-made steel is being imported in appropriate quantities or in a way that it threatens to weaken national security under a provision of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, which allows the president to impose import restrictions for national security reasons. Ross will have 270 days to report his findings to the president.
