Donald Trump is "very interested in a man going to the moon," says historian Douglas Brinkley who met with the president-elect.

Brinkley visited Trump at the Mar-a-Lago resort in South Florida to talk about the presidency, the Washington Examiner reports.

Following his meeting, Brinkley said his conversation with Trump centered on "Nixon and Reagan and Kennedy … a sort of history of the presidency and past inaugurals and things like that."

Brinkley is a professor at Rice University where former President John F. Kennedy delivered his famous "we choose to go to the moon" speech. He said Trump "was very interested in a man going to the moon and the moon shot so we were talking a little bit about that," he said.

NASA did not emerge as an issue during the presidential race. But the website noted there has already been talk about Trump's space ambitions.

The New York Times reports space buffs are hoping the Trump administration will put its weight behind a return trip to the moon.

But the newspaper notes: "…there is no evidence that Congress would give NASA any more money than it's already getting to carry out these adventures."
