President Donald Trump tweeted on Thursday that former national security adviser Michael Flynn got “a great deal” after special counsel Robert Mueller recommended he serve little to no prison time.

"They gave General Flynn a great deal because they were embarrassed by the way he was treated - the FBI said he didn’t lie and they overrode the FBI,” Trump wrote on Twitter Thursday morning.

“They want to scare everybody into making up stories that are not true by catching them in the smallest of misstatements. Sad!”

He added, “WITCH HUNT!” in a follow-up tweet.

Mueller said in a sentencing memo that Flynn should receive leniency despite lying to federal investigators because of the “substantial assistance” he offered to Mueller’s Russia probe.

Last December, Flynn pleaded guilty to lying about his communications with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak. He is scheduled to be sentenced in federal court this month.
