There's new buzz that President-elect Donald Trump could be eyeing Carly Fiorina as his pick for secretary of state.

Trump could be moving toward the former Hewlett-Packard CEO as talk of a Senate confirmation battle loomed over Trump's reported pick of Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson as secretary of state.

Fiorina was scheduled to meet with Trump in New York on Monday. Add to that talk of her as a potential secretary of state was overheard at the annual Pennsylvania State Society (PSS) meeting at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, near the Trump Tower.

“Carly would like a position in the Trump administration,” a longtime GOP strategist attending the PSS meeting, told me under a promise of anonymity. “And she is much more than a CEO.”

The source explained that Fiorina had served on advisory boards under former Secretary of State Colin Powell and under National Security Agency Director Michael Hayden in the Bush administration and had been praised for her work by both.

As a result, Fiorina might also be under consideration for director of National Intelligence, something The New York Times reported Monday, citing an unnamed senior transition official.

In what is the first public disagreement between Trump and Republican lawmakers, Sens. John McCain and Lindsay Graham signaled on Sunday that they would oppose Tillerson’s nomination because of his history, and that of Exxon Mobil in making business deals with Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

In addition, Maryland Sen. Ben Cardin, ranking Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, told reporters he was “concerned” about Tillerson’s relationship with Russia.

Many Trump supporters privately say the incoming president cannot afford a confirmation battle over his secretary of state because one is already brewing over the likely nomination of former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton to be the No. 2 official at the State Department.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., tweeted on his thoughts on Sunday night: “I am a No on John Bolton” as deputy secretary of state, and he vowed to lead a floor fight in the Senate against him. Paul and other libertarian Republicans have long voiced fears that Bolton is too interventionist in his worldview.
