Then-FBI director James Comey wanted Donald Trump to offer up evidence that would help the agency's probe into the campaign of the president-elect and Russia, The Washington Times is reporting.

In fact, that was one of Comey's motives when he briefed Trump on a controversial and disputed dossier on Jan. 6, 2017, at Trump Tower, the newspaper said, attributing the information to the 83-page report released by Justice Department inspector general Michael Horowitz.

The dossier was written by British ex-spy Christopher Steele.

Following his meeting with Trump, Comey briefed the supervisors of the investigation.

Comey's inner circle had viewed his meeting with Trump as an opportunity to get additional information directly from Trump about "Crossfire Hurricane" — the name given to the probe. Comey memorialized details of the meeting in a memo.

The inspector general said Comey violated FBI policies in his handling of memos that documented his private conversations with Trump.

The watchdog office said Comey broke FBI rules by giving one memo containing unclassified information to a friend, with instructions to share the contents with a reporter.

The memos included the dossier briefing at Trump Tower.
