President Donald Trump on Monday tweeted that any Democrat who says the U.S. can have a secure border without a wall is just “following the party line,” and should be dismissed.
“Anytime you hear a Democrat saying that you can have good Boarder [sic] Security without a Wall, write them off as just another politician following the party line," he wrote. "Time for us to save billions of dollars a year and have, at the same time, far greater safety and control!”
Trump’s insistence on a border wall has led him to press Congress for $5 billion to go towards construction, which Democrats have refused to agree to. Last week, Trump said he would be “proud” to have a government shutdown, as will happen if an agreement isn’t reached by December 21, and said he wouldn’t “blame” Democratic leaders for it.
Over the weekend, barbed wire along the U.S.-Mexico border, which was put in places that the Trump administration argued needed more security, was removed by U.S. Army soldiers after locals raised concerns about public safety.
“They want to be overly protective,” Texas Border Commission head and Laredo Mayor Pete Saenz, a Democrat, told ABC News. “But at what cost? The cost to the local economy. The cost to our livelihoods here at the border area.”
He added, “By all means we want security, but it’s got to be done properly and weighed carefully.”
