Former President Donald Trump on Thursday said he would ban mortgages for illegal immigrants, telling a crowd at the Economic Club of New York in Manhattan that the U.S. "cannot ignore the impact that the flood of 21 million illegal aliens has had on driving up housing costs."
"That's why my plan will ban mortgages for illegal aliens," he said. "In California, they're passing a law where they're going to give illegal aliens money to buy a house.
"You have soldiers right now laying on the streets of different cities, all Democrat-run, they're laying on the streets in front of hotels, in some cases luxury hotels, and you have illegal immigrants coming in and living in those hotels and laughing at our soldiers as they walk by into a luxury lobby."
Undocumented immigrants in California could be eligible for state assistance in buying a home under a bill the state Legislature sent to Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom Wednesday.
The proposal, which prompted contentious debate in the Legislature, would specify that people who meet all other requirements for a loan under a state program offering assistance to first-time homebuyers should not be disqualified based on their immigration status. The Assembly gave it final approval in the Legislature in a vote that fell along party lines.
Newsom has until the end of September to sign or veto the bill.
