Flying can be uncomfortable, stressful and tedious. It can also be an enjoyable experience, but a lot of this has to do with the airports.

The U.S. has over 19,000 airports, according to the United States Department of Transport. Granted, most travelers may not have the luxury of booking flights according to how a certain airport is rated but it helps to know the good from the bad.

American travel website The Points Guy recently set out to determine the best and worst U.S. airports, taking into account various factors such as amenities, travel time to the airport and how likely it is that your flight will be delayed.

Based on this data, San Diego International Airport (SAN) topped the list as the best airport in the U.S. With a convenient location, wealth of amenities and stellar record for on-time flights, it is easy to see why this airport ranked so high, and how it managed to knock the former winner, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), into second place.

Meanwhile, over in Illinois, the Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) has been ranked as the worst airport in the U.S., with a notation that it has a reputation for regular flight delays.

Here are the five best and worst rated U.S. airports:

Best U.S. Airports

  1. San Diego International Airport (SAN)
  2. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) International Airport (ATL)
  3. Portland International Airport (PDX)
  4. Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
  5. Sacramento International Airport (SMF)

Worst U.S Airports

  1. Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW)
  2. Orlando International Airport (MCO)
  3. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL)
  4. Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW)
  5. Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW)
