The Democratic Party has become the party of "fourth trimester" abortions by backing laws that ease restrictions on late-term procedures, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said Friday.
"They are making this a defining issue," Perkins told Fox News' "Fox and Friends."
According to a Rasmussen Poll just out, I think last night, two-thirds of Americans do not agree with what New York and with what Virginia is doing."
The term "fourth trimester" has been used by some to describe the killing of a child after the moment of childbirth, with talk of the practice coming under discussion with a late-term abortion law under discussion in Virginia.
Last week, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam came under fire for comments on his state's proposed law, when he spoke of allowing the decision concerning a newborn's life to be decided by its mother and her physicians.
President Donald Trump, meanwhile, is on the "right side of this" with his challenge to Americans to "choose life over death," said Perkins.
On Thursday, a divided Supreme Court stopped Louisiana from enforcing new regulations on abortion clinics, and Perkins said he would hate to see the court step in to stop a "reasonable policy that would protect women and unborn children."
However, he said he thinks the law will proceed and remain in place.
