President Donald Trump had the right analysis about Washington, D.C., being controlled by corporations and the establishment and was able to win over Americans who felt the same way, but his solutions have been "absolutely terrible," billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer, who is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, said Thursday.

"The biggest fact in American politics is that four out of five Americans believe that corporations bought democracy," Steyer told CNN's "New Day." "I think what they're responding to was his attack on the establishment for disrespecting and paying no attention to them. and in fact, that is what four out of five Americans across the spectrum, Democrats, Republicans, and independents, believe. That's the whole point of my campaign."

But Trump is a "failed president," said Steyer, who has been leading an initiative for months to impeach him. "His actual policies are disastrous. But that doesn't mean his original analysis and his ability to relate to people and talk about that is disastrous. I don't underestimate him at all. He was absolutely on point, he just didn't know what the heck to do about it."

Steyer also said he decided to run for president after listening to the other candidates debating about what they wanted to do in a "perfect world" but not saying how they'd get that done.

He also rejected arguments from other candidates that he's bought his way into the race and insisted he will make the September debate stage, even though he entered the race late.

"A poll came out this week that had me at 7% on average," he said. "The rule of thumb is to be at 2%. So I say if anybody does a poll, I'm in."
