Tom Ridge: Containment No Strategy Against ISIS

By    |   Monday, 02 Feb 2015 08:09 PM

President Barack Obama should be doing more than trying to contain the Islamic State (ISIS), says former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge.

"Containment is not a strategy. Containment means maintain the status quo. Containment means they'll continue to take hostages. Containment means they will continue to wreak havoc in that region in Syria and Iraq," Ridge said Monday on Fox News Channel's "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren."

Obama's repeated statements that he will not put American boots on the ground against ISIS in Iraq and Syria sounds more like a political statement than a realistic assessment of what is needed on the ground, Ridge said.

Ultimately, more ground troops will be needed, though not in massive numbers, he said.

Ridge also believes aid should be sent directly to the Kurds fighting in northern Iraq and not funneled through Baghdad, which is influenced by Iran.

And, he said, Obama should say that the enemy is radical Islam.

"Check that box. He won't do that," Ridge said.

Instead, Ridge said, the Iraq situation will be left for the next president to deal with.

"Let's identify them and make sure that everybody in the world finally realizes that America gets it and we're not interested in containing (ISIS,)" Ridge said, "We are interested in defeating them."
