Democrats are planning a 50-state strategy in the 2018 midterm elections, banking that recent wins may presage a wave that could give the party a majority in the House.

In a fundraising message, Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez boasted the party is "on a roll," the Washington Examiner reported.

"If we carry out our strategy in all 50 states next year, we can take back the House," Perez said, the Examiner reported. "But I don't have to tell you that it's going to take a lot more to win in 2018 than it did in 2017. We have to compete across the country, and we're not going to catch Republicans off guard like we did this year."

The strategy breaks with the usual practice for parties to concede — tacitly at least — in states where the opposition is strong in order to pour resources into states where seats are up for grabs.

But Perez appears to be gambling that given Democratic wins in the Alabama Senate race and gubernatorial contests in Virginia and New Jersey, there's an opportunity to mount challenges in states where the party wouldn't ordinarily commit resources, the Examiner noted.
