Five-term Rep. Tom Marino, R-Pa., announced his resignation Thursday, effective Jan. 23, to take a private sector job, The Daily Item reports.

"Having spent over two decades serving the public, I have chosen to take a position in the private sector where I can use both my legal and business experience to create jobs around the nation," Marino said in a statement.

"I want to thank the people of the 12th Congressional District of Pennsylvania for the faith they have placed in me to represent them in Congress. It truly has been one of the greatest honors of my life."

Marino, a former prosecutor was among first House Republicans to endorse Donald Trump and was an informal adviser to Trump during the campaign, The Washington Post reports.

His departure will leave the GOP with 198 seats as the outcome of the House race in North Carolina remains unresolved.

Marino withdrew from consideration as Trump's drug czar after a Washington Post/“60 Minutes” investigation into his legislative moves that weakened the Drug Enforcement Administration's ability to crack down on drug distributors, the Post said.
