Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio has decided to challenge fellow Democrat Nancy Pelosi for the title of House Minority Leader.

Fox News reported Thursday afternoon that Ryan, who has served in the chamber since 2003, wants to shake things up and take over the job as the top House Democrat.

Reporter Mike Emanuel said "a lot of Democrats are frustrated" by the fact they only picked up five seats in last week's election.

"We've been hearing grumblings about whether it's time for new leadership in the house," Emanuel reported. "It is surprising in a sense that Pelosi has been so powerful, so for Ryan, a step out like this is really quite defiant, but it's not surprising at all."

Ryan has dropped hints in recent days that he was considering running for the Minority Leader post. Politico reported Thursday afternoon that Ryan informed Democrats of his leadership aspirations in a letter.

"Vote for me and I will dedicate all of my energy to lead us back into the majority. Our constituents deserve nothing less," Ryan wrote.

Pelosi has served in the House since 1987 and has been Minority Leader twice, from 2003-2007 and from 2011 through last week's elections. She was House Speaker from 2007-2011.
