Rep. Tim Ryan: Dems to Lose 48 States With Healthcare Plan

By    |   Wednesday, 31 July 2019 10:54 AM

Rep. Tim Ryan said Wednesday Democrats will lose in 48 states if presidential candidates continue with their call for "Medicare For All" healthcare plans, particularly if they result in the loss of negotiated benefits for union workers like the ones he represents in Ohio.

"I represent a lot of these people, and it's not good," the Democrat candidate for president told MSNBC's "Morning Joe."  "If our message isn't that we want to provide healthcare for everybody, it will be that we want to take good medical coverage from people who have negotiated good healthcare ... this could be a potential disaster for us."

Keeping healthcare benefits is a vital factor in many union bargaining battles, Ryan added.

"I can't tell you how many times I've watched (union) members give away wages in order to get really good healthcare because they know they need that security," said Ryan. "To go in as a party and say, 'We're going to take that away from you,' is not good. Let's focus on giving healthcare, getting healthcare affordable and accessible to people who don't have it. That should be the message, not taking it away."

But if that is not the message, Democrats will win just two states, Ryan warned, even though he acknowledged he's "having a hard time figuring out what the two states are we're going to win, if our lead message is we're going to confiscate healthcare from people."

Meanwhile, Ryan also said he does not think border crossings should be decriminalized.

"This has nothing to do with taking kids from their parents," said Ryan. "Obviously that's a disaster and we shouldn't be doing it. It's heartbreaking. We should secure the border. We should have a comprehensive path to citizenship."

However, he said he doesn't think healthcare should be provided for illegal immigrants, as there are many U.S. citizens who are "barely keeping their noses above water."

"I just don't think you can wander into the United States without it being a criminal charge," said Ryan.
