A week after Tiger Woods said that the office of the presidency should be respected no matter who occupies the White House, President Donald Trump tweeted his support for the golfer.

"Tiger Woods showed great class in the way he answered the question about the Office of the Presidency and me," Trump wrote in the tweet.  "Now they say the so-called 'left' is angry at him. So sad, but the "center & right" loves Tiger, Kanye, George Foreman, Jim Brown & so many other greats, even more......."

Woods made the comments after the final round of the PGA Northern Trust tournament last week when a reporter asked him if he had anything to say to those who "find it interesting" that he has a friendly relationship with the president despite Trump’s feuds with other sports stars, Fox News reported.

"He's the president of the United States," Woods answered. "You have to respect the office. No matter who is in the office, you may like, dislike personality or the politics, but we all must respect the office."

The golfer added that "I’ve known Donald for a number of years. "We've played golf together. We've had dinner together. I've known him pre-presidency and obviously during his presidency."

Woods’ comments elicited strong criticism from many in sports world, such as ESPN’s "First Take" co-host Max Kellerman, who called the golfer’s remarks as a "thoughtless statement dressed up as a thoughtful statement, and it either holds in contempt the intelligence of the people who hear it or else it’s just a stupid thing to say."

Kellerman continued his argument, commenting that "To say you must have respect for the office - Tiger, be clear. Are you saying that the office, therefore, confers respect onto its present temporary occupant?" Kellerman said. "No. Having respect for the office means principally, in my view, is the office holder should have respect for the office…  It is not such that we have such great respect for the office that no matter what the behavior of its occupant we must therefore respect its occupant because of the office."

Trump followed up his tweet on Woods with another that said, "The fact is that African/American unemployment is now the lowest in the history of our country. Same with Asian, Hispanic and almost every other group. The Democrats have been all talk and no action. My Administration has already produced like no other, and everyone sees it!"

Trump had already praised Woods the day after the golfer made the comment, tweeting that "The Fake News Media worked hard to get Tiger Woods to say something that he didn’t want to say. Tiger wouldn’t play the game - he is very smart."
