Thornberry: Social Media Now Used as 'Means of Warfare'

By    |   Friday, 15 March 2019 12:34 PM

The ability of terrorists to livestream their attacks on two New Zealand mosques for 17 minutes shows how social media has become "one of the means of warfare," Rep. Mac Thornberry, a member of the House Armed Services Committee said Friday.

"We saw ISIS use this; now we've seen these guys use it," the Texas Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "The Russians, in a different variety, use it because they're trying to influence public opinion. Terrorism is an attack to effect political change, and that's another example this morning."

Thornberry also commented on the news that North Korea is threatening to pull out of denuclearization talks with the United States, saying the matter was "same song, 57th verse."

"They pretend they're negotiating but then they go on a different course if it doesn't work and they escalate up the tensions and hope that they can get some concessions," said Thornberry. "I think the president is exactly right to put Kim [Jong Un] to the test. Are you going to keep your word or not?"

The United States needs to maintain a strong military posture, said Thornberry.

He also pointed out that while talks are going on, "the North Koreans continue to build missiles, and then you had the public statement this morning that they may go back to testing."

"The trend is not necessarily good, and we cannot stake the security of the United States on the word of Kim Jong Un," said Thornberry. "Again, that's why our military strength is so vital."
