More than six in 10 Americans — including 49 percent of Republicans — think there's a need for a third political party in the U.S., according to the latest Gallup poll released Wednesday.

The 61 percent is the highest recorded by Gallup on the issue, but it's consistent with polling since 2013:

  • 60 percent in 2013 thought there should be a third party.
  • 57 percent in 2015 thought so.

Other results from the survey, according to Gallup:

  • 77 percent of Independents favor a third party, up 4 points.
  • 49 percent of Republicans favor it, down 2 points.
  • 52 percent of Democrats favor it, up 9 points.

"The real constituency for a third party is likely to be political independents, meaning the party would have to be politically centrist," Gallup wrote in its analysis. "With record numbers of Americans frustrated with the way the country is being governed, the country could be inching closer to having enough people who want an alternative to the status quo to make it a reality, at least with the right candidate at the helm."

Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted Sept. 6 -10, with a random sample of 1,022 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. The margin of sampling error is 4 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.
