The Boston Herald, one of the few conservative voices in New England, announced Friday it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and has been sold to GateHouse Media.

The paper, which first begin publishing in 1846, said it will continue conducting day-to-day business in print and on its website.

Publisher Patrick J. Purcell addressed staff members in person and sent a memo to his employees.

"I am very proud of the spectacular management team with whom I have worked hand in hand over the years," Purcell wrote. "And I am equally as proud of the excellent staff in all areas of our company who have worked tirelessly to make the Boston Herald a relevant and respected provider of local and regional news for Boston and the area.

"Boston is a better city for the Herald's unique and fearless local reporting. Because of all of you, we are well known for our influential political, community, business and sports coverage across the region and beyond."

GateHouse Media acquired all of the Herald's assets, and the tabloid-style paper filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the District of Delaware. The purchase still needs to be approved by a court.

Based in Pittsford, N.Y., GateHouse Media owns more than 100 weekly and daily titles, including the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, the Cape Cod Times, and The Patriot Ledger.

The Herald competes with The Boston Globe, a broadsheet that's been in business since 1872.
