Texas property owners along the border with Mexico are getting notices from the federal government seeking permission to survey their lands for the construction of a possible wall, KENS 5 News reported on Sunday.

Texas Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar, said there have been more than 200 such requests made in Starr and Hidalgo counties.

One of those contacted was Escobares Mayor Noel Escobar, who said that he and his neighbors received letters from the Army Corps of Engineers and Customs and Border Protection several weeks ago asking permission to survey their land.

At least some of the residents have been disappointed in the offers. Roma resident Felix Rodriguez said a government employee surveying his land earlier this year proposed $300 for a portion of his 500-square-foot property, but Rodriguez said he wants at least $1,500.

Building a wall along the Mexican border was one of President Donald Trump's key campaign promises.

The most recent Gallup poll, however, shows that 57 percent of Americans do not support significantly expanding the construction of walls along the border, while only 41 percent do back it.
