NYT: Political Battle Underlies Border Agent's Mysterious Death

It is still unclear how one border patrol agent in West Texas was killed last month and another seriously injured, yet President Donald Trump, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and the National Border Patrol Council have politicized the incident to call on additional security along the border, The New York Times reports.

Culbertson County Sheriff Oscar Carrillo, one of the first responders on the scene, told local media the incident could have been an accident, but the FBI is pursuing a theory two undocumented illegal immigrants involved in smuggling people, drugs, or both into the U.S., assaulted the agents.

"If this was an assault, believe me, as sheriff, I'd be the first one out there emphasizing safety in our community and with our deputies, pairing them up," Carrillo told The Dallas Morning News. "But from what I know and see, that was not the case here."

The border agents' union insists the agents were attacked and The National Border Patrol Council spokesman Chris Cabrera called Sheriff Carrillo a "dingbat" on his weekly podcast, the Times reported.

"All these other theories, it’s tarnishing the name of our agents," Cabrera reportedly said.

Rogelio Martinez died and Stephen Garland suffered severe head injuries in a Texas culvert last month, but unanswered questions remain as to what happened, as Garland has claimed memory loss.

Trump after the attack tweeted, "we will, and must build the wall," and Sen. Cruz called the incident, "a stark reminder of the ongoing threat that an unsecure border poses to the safety of our communities and those charged with defending them."

The FBI has yet to arrest anyone or even identify anyone of interest in the case and is offering a $50,00 reward for "information leading to the resolution of this case."
