Report: US Cuts Off $255M in Foreign Military Aid to Pakistan

The Trump administration has decided to withhold more than a quarter-billion dollars in military aid to Pakistan over its protection of terrorists, Fox News reported Monday.

"The United States does not plan to spend the $255 million in [Fiscal Year] 2016 Foreign Military Financing for Pakistan at this time," an unnamed National Security Council official told Fox News.

"The president has made clear that the United States expects Pakistan to take decisive action against terrorists and militants on its soil, and that Pakistan's actions in support of the South Asia Strategy will ultimately determine the trajectory of our relationship, including future security assistance."

The official added the administration would continue to "review Pakistan's level of cooperation," Fox News reported.

The funding cutoff followed President Donald Trump's ominous tweet earlier Monday the nation had "foolishly" given Pakistan more than $33 billion in aid over the past 15 years, ending the posting with a defiant, "No more!"

Pakistan's defense minister, Khurram Dastgir-Khan, quickly responded with his own Twitter bomb, insisting Pakistan has taken numerous actions to help the United States in is fight against terrorists — including with intelligence that "decimated" al-Qaida.

The New York Times reported last week the administration had been considering the aid cutoff, noting the administration had delayed sending the aid in August to the nuclear nation.

And the decision to withhold the aid reportedly followed Pakistan's refusal to hand over to the Americans an operative of the Haqqani Network caught during the rescue of an American-Canadian family in October, according to the Hindustan Times.
