Congressional Candidate's 'Make America White Again' Billboard Sparks Fury

An independent candidate for Congress is under fire for a campaign billboard declaring his hope of making "America White Again."

The sign, which appeared over Highway 411 near Benton, Tenn., was put up by Rick Tyler, who's running for Tennessee's 3rd congressional district seat.

Tyler told a local NBC News affiliate his message was meant to convey the desire for America should go back to a "1960s, 'Ozzie and Harriet,' 'Leave it to Beaver' time when there were no break-ins; no violent crime; no mass immigration."

"I believe the majority of the people in the county like [the sign]," he told the station. "I saw people taking pictures beside it right after I posted it."

He also posted a second sign with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" quote written over a White House surrounded by Confederate flags, the station reported.

His billboard was taken down Tuesday night, ABC affiliate WTVC reported.

The political and social media backlash was fierce.

"There's no room for this type of hateful display in our political discourse," Ryan Haynes, the Tennessee Republican Party chairman, told the NBC affiliate, WRCB, in a statement, the Washington Post reports.

"Racism should be rejected in all its heinous forms in the Third Congressional District and around the country."

And Republican Rep. Charles "Chuck" Fleischmann, who currently represents the 3rd District, also spoke out against Tyler's message.

"I totally and unequivocally condemn the billboard and Mr. Tyler’s message and will vigorously fight any form of racism in the 3rd district of Tennessee or anywhere else in the nation," the congressman said in a statement, the Post reports.

Others condemned Tyler on his restaurant and campaign Facebook pages.

The candidate's lengthy response on Facebook was reprinted by the Post; the Facebook post was no longer accessible Thursday night.

You see," Tyler wrote, "this is not a mere publicity stunt, but rather a calculated maneuver to dispense hardcore truth while simultaneously doing an end run around the iron curtain of censorship," the Post reports.

"As Orwell stated, 'In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.' Unfortunately, a globalist cartel has long held power in our nation, and in effect, there has already been a soft revolution wherein lawful constitutional government has been supplanted by a rogue band of oligarchic criminals."

"Those who seek to set things aright are actually counter-revolutionaries, endeavoring to facilitate the restoration of lawful, constitutional government."
