Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, a Republican candidate for president, suggested Tuesday the Justice Department should investigate Planned Parenthood in the wake of stunning videos that showed officials at the organization discussing the sale of aborted fetal body parts.

Cruz and two other GOP candidates, former neurosurgeon Ben Carson and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, appeared at an anti-abortion rally on Tuesday that was put together by Students for Life of America. According to video of the event posted to Politico, Cruz essentially called on the feds to open an investigation.

"How sad is it that almost no media observer thinks there is any chance the U.S. Department of Justice would actually investigate whether Planned Parenthood and these senior officials have violated federal criminal laws?" Cruz said. "Today, the Obama Justice Department is operating as little more than a partisan arm of the Democratic national committee."

The Planned Parenthood video
s have added another layer to the abortion debate in the U.S.

The Senate is now getting involved, with the chamber gearing up for a vote  on whether or not to stop the flow of government funding to Planned Parenthood.

At Tuesday's rally, Paul said the vote will happen before Congress' August recess.

"There comes a time in the history of nations when we will all be judged on whether or not we took a stance for life. Now is that time," Paul said. "Today we take a stand, and today I have good news: the Senate will vote on defunding Planned Parenthood before we go home in August."

Carson, who was the first doctor to successfully separate conjoined twins at the head in 1987, spoke at the rally about Americans' morals slipping.

"[A baby's brain] is a very sophisticated organ, and the fact of the matter is it's much more sophisticated than these little creatures that the Environmental Protection Agency and others are trying to save, you know?" Carson told the crowd. "Why don't they spend their time and effort trying to save human life?

"I think that we have gradually slid in terms of our morals, to a point where we don't really care about the killing of human beings. "That is the bad news. The good news is, I think we are changing."

Earlier Tuesday during a radio interview,
Paul referenced Obamacare  as he argued against the government providing funding to Planned Parenthood.

"I think there's a strong argument, even for those on the other side of the coin, that guess what, you know, we have free health care everywhere now, we don't need Planned Parenthood," Paul said. "We have community health centers that have doubled in their funding. We've put $5 billion into community health centers. They do everything that Planned Parenthood does, except for abortion.

"There's absolutely no reason for any money to go into Planned Parenthood."

Carson said earlier Tuesday that fetal tissue samples, the sale of which was discussed on the videos, are not necessarily needed  for research purposes.
