Democrats want to make Texas just like California, Sen. Ted Cruz told supporters at a rally on Saturday, CNN reported.

"We are seeing tens of millions of dollars flooding into the state of Texas from liberals all over the country who desperately want to turn the state of Texas blue," Cruz said during a speaking event in Katy, Texas. "They want us to be just like California, right down to tofu and silicon and dyed hair."

The Republican senator acknowledged that his wife, Heidi Cruz, was "a California vegetarian… but I brought her to the great state of Texas."

Texas is considered a Republican stronghold, but Cruz finds himself in a tough fight to retain his seat against Democratic challenger Rep. Beto O'Rourke.

Cruz holds a slim lead over O'Rourke, 49 percent to 45 percent, with six percent of voters undecided according to an NBC News/Marist Poll released last month.

Cruz criticized O'Rourke at the rally in Katy, saying he was "going hard, hard to the left" and compared him to Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders, according to CNN.

O’Rourke, meanwhile, campaigned Saturday in Houston, where he told supporters, “Whatever you’re doing do, please do more of it,” according to the Texas Tribune.

The Democrat emphasized that “Not a single one of us wants to wake up with anything other than a hangover from celebrating a victory on the 7th of November.”
