Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, holds a nearly 10-point lead over his challenger, Democratic Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke according to the latest Quinnipiac University Poll released Tuesday.
The vast majority, 93 percent, of the likely voters surveyed said they have made up their minds about the upcoming midterm election. Despite his success in raising his profile, O’Rourke still trails the incumbent by 9 percent.
- Cruz: 54 percent.
- O’Rourke: 45 percent.
"The Texas U.S. Senate race between Sen. Ted Cruz and Congressman Beto O'Rourke, and Democratic hopes for an upset win there, have boosted talk of a Senate takeover. These numbers may calm that talk," Quinnipiac University Poll assistant director Peter A. Brown said in a statement. "Congressman O'Rourke may be drawing big crowds and media attention, but Texas likely voters like Sen. Cruz better."
Voters were firmly split on partisan lines. Most O’Rourke voters ranked healthcare as their most important issue, followed by the Supreme Court, while Cruz supporters chose the economy or immigration.
Quinnipiac also found that Republican Gov. Greg Abbott holds a strong lead over his Democratic challenger, as well as having high favorability and job approval ratings.
"Gov. Greg Abbott is highly regarded by Texas voters and appears on the way to a landslide re-election. His lead over Sheriff Lupe Valdez is just under 20 points among likely voters and the governor gets good grades on his job performance," Brown said.
Quinnipiac surveyed 807 likely voters in Texas by phone from September 11-17, with a margin of error of 4.1 percentage points.
