Obama Makes Policing Practices Recommendations

By    |   Tuesday, 03 Mar 2015 06:55 PM

In response to the findings by the White House task force examining policing methods across the country, President Barack Obama wants policing practices to change.

One recommendation includes having all situations that result in police officers using force, resulting in injury or death be subject to independent criminal investigations, The New York Times is reporting.

In addition, police departments need to do more to build trust in the communities where they serve by enacting anti-racial profiling policies, having a more lenient approach toward mass demonstrations and tracking police shooting data, Obama said.

The task force was established in December following the court decisions of the police killings of two black men by white police officers in Ferguson, Missouri and Staten Island, New York.

"The moment is now for us to make these changes," Obama said Monday, when he met with task force members.

"We have a great opportunity, coming out of some great conflict and tragedy, to really transform how we think about community-law-enforcement relations so that everybody feels safer and our law enforcement officers feel, rather than being embattled, feel fully supported. We need to seize that opportunity," the president added.

While some of the recommendations may be controversial and difficult to implement, Obama said, the Department of Justice will begin working on them.

The preliminary report offered by the task force includes 63 recommendations.

Those recommendations include establishing a National Crime and Justice Task Force to aid overhauling the criminal justice system; posting data on websites about stops, frisks, summonses, arrests and crime, including demographics; and taking efforts to "minimize the appearance of a military operation" in the face of large protests.
