More than half a million people have pledged not to shop at Target after the retail giant said transgender people can use whichever bathroom and fitting room they choose in its stores.

The American Family Association, a non-profit Christian group, posted a petition on its website last week and asked people to sign it as a promise to boycott Target. As of Monday afternoon, the online petition had more than 561,000 signatures.

In the wake of a law passed in North Carolina that says transgender people must use public restrooms in line with the gender of their birth, Target responded with a statement last week.

"In our stores, we demonstrate our commitment to an inclusive experience in many ways," the statement reads. "Most relevant for the conversations currently underway, we welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity.

"Everyone deserves to feel like they belong. And you'll always be accepted, respected and welcomed at Target."

American Family Association president Tim Wildmon blasted the policy.

"This means a man can simply say he 'feels like a woman today' and enter the women's restroom … even if young girls or women are already in there," Wildmon wrote.

"Target's policy is exactly how sexual predators get access to their victims. And with Target publicly boasting that men can enter women's bathrooms, where do you think predators are going to go?"

Wildmon said a "common-sense" solution would be to have a single-occupancy unisex bathroom to go along with separate men's and women's rooms.
