LIGNET: Report Raises Questions of Syrian Rebels' Role in Massacre

Conflicting reports out of Syria are causing scrutiny of the rebels’ claims that the regime is responsible for the massacre of citizens. Last week, Germany’s leading newspaper published a report that refutes claims of government responsibility and puts the blame for the May 25 massacre in the villages around Houla on the rebels, with eye witnesses saying it was Shiite and Alawi minorities in those villages who were slaughtered. The report will likely lead to a UN investigation and could weaken international support for the rebels, further prolonging the bloody conflict.
