LIGNET: Syrian Massacre Won't Lead to Western Intervention

UN special envoy Kofi Annan called last week’s massacre in Syria a ‘tipping point.’ But the massacre, in which 108 were killed, many of them women and children, is not likely to tip the scales in favor of outside intervention in Syria ’s civil war.

The West has no desire to go into Syria without the backing of the United Nations, and the UN Security Council is, for all practical purposes, immobilized by China and Russia, both of whom remain allied with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

There is no resolution to Syria ’s conflict in sight, and the only scenario that might spur the international community to act is one that involves ethnic cleansing, as seen in Bosnia in the 1990s.
