President Barack Obama's secretary of Health and Human Services endorsed a bipartisan deal Friday to save subsidies for insurance companies, the Washington Examiner reported.

"Their marketplace stabilization bill and the process through which it came together represents the way that we can get things done," Sylvia Burwell said of the Senate measure proposed by GOP Sens. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee and Patty Murray of Washington state.

However, the deal faces strong opposition from Republican congressional leaders and from the White House. President Donald Trump is demanding an end to the bailouts for insurance companies subsidized under the Affordable Care Act to cover federal mandates, including covering persons with pre-existing conditions.

Alexander and Murray have proposed restoring the subsidies in exchange for changes in Obamacare that would include relief for companies and individual from some of the requirements under the 2010 healthcare act.

The deal has the support of 12 Republican senators, the Business Insider reported, listing the GOP backers of the deal.

If an Alexander-Murray bill reached the floor of the Senate for a vote, it would likely attract most Democrats in a filibuster-proof majority.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said he will not bring the bill up for a vote unless Trump expressed support for it.
