Attorney General William Barr is "embedded deeply" in President Donald Trump's team and should resign his post following his actions on special counsel Robert Mueller's report, Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., said Thursday.
"He’s lost the credibility of the American people," the California Democrat, a candidate in the 2020 presidential race, told MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace. "He is not recused from an investigation. Where he should be recused, he’s embedded deeply into the Trump team and that affects the credibility that the attorney general must have."
Barr must make a choice about who he wants to represent, whether it is Trump or the people of the United States.
"You can't do both," he said. "Attorney General Barr wants to represent Donald Trump [and] I think he should resign."
Meanwhile, commenting on the report itself, Swalwell said that even if it doesn't conclude Trump broke any laws, he hopes "once and for all" Trump will recognize that Russia attacked the 2016 election.
"It's clear that our democracy has been compromised, and this president needs to acknowledge that otherwise, we won't do anything to protect this from happening again," the congressman said.
Swalwell, when asked if there is a call to commence impeachment proceedings against Trump, said congressional investigations have begun on him and the House Judiciary Committee was to meet on Thursday.
"We are first seeking to bring Bob Mueller in to testify to the full report because we paid for this report; we should see all of it, including what’s redacted as long as it doesn’t affect anything ongoing," said Swalwell.
