John Sununu to Newsmax: Obama Impeachment 'Will Divide the Country'

Impeaching President Barack Obama is "a bad political policy" that will destroy Republican chances for winning the Senate in November, former White House Chief of Staff John Sununu told Newsmax on Thursday.

"You can't have an impeachment," Sununu, who served under President George H.W. Bush, said in an interview. "It'll divide the country."

Sununu, 75, who also served as New Hampshire governor, joined the rising Republican tide against impeaching Obama advocated in recent days by 2008 GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin over the illegal immigration crisis at the U.S border.

He said while the House is controlled by Republicans, they're outnumbered in the Senate. The Senate has 53 Democrats to 45 Republicans. The chamber also has two independents, who caucus with the Democrats.

"The Democrats will always have a sufficiently blocking percentage in the Senate, so why undertake something that will serve as a rallying cry for the opposition and have no chance of working?" Sununu asked.

"With all due respect to my friends who are saying that we ought to be moving in that direction, that's a bad political policy."

"If we want to fix things, we have to win an election in '14 and an election in '16," he said. "And you don't win those elections by giving the opposition a rallying issue around which to coalesce. An impeachment certainly would be that."
