Hazardous industrial chemicals are present in the drinking water that services millions of Americans, according to a new report.

The Washington Post reports that more than six million Americans are drinking water that contains polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substances, also known as PFASs. Those chemicals have been in commercial use for decades for things like non-stick coatings on cooking pans and food wrappers.

These chemicals can potentially cause kidney cancer, problems with the thyroid, and other heath issues.

A Harvard University study led by Xindi Hu made the findings. The results were published in Environmental Science & Technology Letters.

"Virtually all Americans are exposed to these compounds," Hu said. "They never break down. Once they are released into the environment, they are there."

The chemicals were found in high quantities near industrial sites, military fire training areas, and other locations where the chemicals are present for various uses. Overall, the chemicals were detected in 194 of 4,864 water supplies located in more than 30 states.

The EPA has restrictions on certain chemicals appearing in drinking water, but there are no such standards for PFASs like the ones found by the Harvard researchers, reports the Post.

There have been several instances of tainted drinking water in recent memory, including increased amounts of lead in Texas, algae-based toxins in Iowa, and a proposal that would relax the restrictions on toxin levels in Florida.
