A wicked prankster is taunting a small Pennsylvania town ahead of the Friday release of the latest "It" horror film, tying red balloons onto sewer grates – a nod to the franchise's devilish clown Pennywise.

Lititz, Pennsylvania, police pleaded with the prankster to cut it out because it was creeping people out, according to a tweet by ABC affiliate WNEP.

"I don't think we have an accurate balloon count, but it's definitely above 20," Sgt. Stephen Detz with the Lititz Borough Police Department told CBS News on Tuesday. "They pretty much hit the entire town and the area around the town."

Detz says there are some "It" fans within the department, so when officers saw the balloons they caught the reference.

The department warned in its Facebook post:

In a later Facebook update, the department showed one of its investigators wearing a Pennywise-like fire-red wig to dust a balloon for prints.

According to website Vulture.com, the Pennsylvania State Police also recently warned citizens to be on the lookout for a resurgence in creepy clown activity ahead of the movie based on the 1986 book by horror writer Stephen King.
