Blackstone Group CEO Stephen A. Schwarzman, a billionaire Forbes lists as the 35th richest man in America, has given $10 million to the National Library of Israel (NLI) for a new building.

The Stephen A. Schwarzman Education Center will be constructed on the new NLI campus in Jerusalem, which is currently under construction. It is scheduled to open in 2021.

"My hope is that the Stephen A. Schwarzman Education Center will serve as the crossroads for its new campus, bringing together future generations of students from around the world and creating a hub for cutting-edge innovation and education," said Schwarzman, whose net worth is more than $12 billion.

"Now, more than ever, our focus must be on fostering cross-cultural relationships. I'm pleased to support the NLI as it furthers this mission by sharing artifacts and resources from Jewish, Muslim and Christian history and encouraging deep cultural understanding."

The Schwarzman Center will comprise 3,900 square feet and include a multi-purpose space that can hold 100 people, along with three spaces for activities and workshops. The building will be outfitted with technology to allow for international communication.

Schwarzman's significant philanthropy has focused on education and international relations. Previously, the billionaire donated $100 million to the New York Public Library.

In 2013, Schwarzman announced a $100 million gift to establish a scholarship program in China modeled after the Rhodes scholars program.

And, in 2015, the Archdiocese of New York announced that Schwarzman and his wife, Christine, had donated $40 million for underprivileged children to attend inner-city Catholic schools.

Schwarzman also chaired the Strategic and Policy Forum, a group of senior business leaders formed by Trump in 2017 to advise him on job creation and economic growth. The body was disbanded last August.

The NLI was established in 1892. It is located on the campus of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in the city's Givat Ram neighborhood and has more than five million books. Last year, ground was broken on the project to move the library next to the Israeli Parliament, roughly 3 miles west of Jerusalem's Old City.
