Stay far away from Hillary!

That's the loud-and-clear message House Speaker Paul Ryan and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy delivered to Rep. Jason Chaffetz on Wednesday — telling the Utah Republican in a closed-door meeting he cannot go forward with any probe involving Hillary Clinton, Politico reports.

Multiple sources familiar with the meeting told Politico that the reason for the private powwow was a story published by the political news website in which Chaffetz, chair of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, was quoted.

According to that article, Chaffetz said a pending probe into government record keeping practices would not be "specifically trying to target the secretary, but when she creates her own private email system, she's ensnarled herself."

Politico says House Republican leaders were "taken aback," saying they told him to avoid Clinton in his larger probe of the use of personal email for government business.

"Ryan and McCarthy have been clear about their preference that the FBI handle anything Clinton related. But Chaffetz's comments led to confusion in Republican leadership," said Politico's Jake Sherman and Rachel Bade.

Republican lawmakers are being extra cautious in the investigations involving Clinton, the Democratic presidential front-runner.

Clinton has been under scrutiny for her use of an unsecured home email server and personal email account when she was secretary of state.

Last week, the State Department said 22 emails found on her server were determined to contain top-secret information.
