Southern border apprehensions dropped significantly in January – a decrease that might reflect an expected seasonal decrease, or a slowing in years-long flood of immigrants, CNN reported.

According to Customs and Border Protection statistics for January 2017, apprehensions of families dropped 42 percent – down to 9,314 from 16,135 in December 2016; those of unaccompanied children were down 39 percent – to 4,430 from 7,243 last December; and total apprehensions dropped 27 percent to 31,575, down from 43,272 in December 2016.

Total apprehensions were 37,014 in December 2015 and 23,758 in January 2016, a drop of 36 percent, CBP data showed.

The data showed apprehensions of families fell 65 percent, to 3,143 in January 2016 from 8,973 in December 2015.
