South Korea has purchased 1,000 doses of anthrax vaccines to give biochemical counterterrorism agents or civilians, CNN is reporting.

The vaccines arrived in November, according to the news network. However, there are no plans to vaccinate the general public in South Korea, officials said.

According to a National Security Strategy report released by the Trump administration this month, North Korea "has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on nuclear, chemical and biological weapons."

"North Korea is also pursuing chemical and biological weapons which could also be delivered by missile," the report said.

North Korea has labeled the claims "groundless."

Adding to the concern was a report in the South Korean media that claimed a North Korean soldier, who defected this year, was found to have anthrax antibodies in his system. It suggested he was vaccinated against the biological weapon or exposed to it at some point, CNN said.

South Korean officials did not confirm the report.

But the Japanese newspaper Asahi has reported North Korea is beginning tests to see if anthrax can endure the heat and pressure when carried on intercontinental ballistic missiles, according to Fox News.

There are unconfirmed reports that North Korea has succeeded in such experiments, Fox News said, attributing the information to the Japanese newspaper.

A report by the Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs said North Korea may have "anthrax and smallpox" pathogens that could be made turned into weapons.

"North Korea is assumed to have several pathogens in possession," the report stated.
