SC Gov. McMaster: Bill Would Require Cities to Prove They Are Not Sanctuary Cities

Cities in South Carolina would have to prove they are not harboring or protecting illegal immigrants, according to legislation supported by South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster.

"We want to send a message to cities, and all municipalities that we can't have sanctuary cities. We want the whole country, we want the criminals to know that South Carolina does not have any sanctuary cities," McMaster said Wednesday on Fox News' "Fox & Friends."

"The way the law is now, under state law we're supposed to check to be sure that anyone who is a prisoner, taken into custody, is not an alien, and if so, we're supposed to tell Homeland Security. We really have no mechanism to be sure that is being done.

"This requires a formal assessment to be made, and filled out under oath to certify that all our municipalities are complying with the law," McMaster said.

"But the main thing is, this is a law-abiding place. We want to be sure that everybody knows that we abide by all the laws," the governor said, adding that it is "absurd" for officials to say they support sanctuary cities.

"We want to fix the leaks in the roof. We want to fix the roof before the rain starts. We don't want to wait and see where the leaks are. What we're trying to do is be sure," the governor said in the Fox News interview.

A Rasmussen poll released on Wednesday shows that support for taking legal action against sanctuary cities is on the decline.
