Former Vice President Joe Biden is surging away from his Democratic Primary opponents in South Carolina, leading by a wide 31-percentage point margin that has grown 14 points in the past month, according to the latest Post and Courier-Change Research Poll.

"He's always been popular in South Carolina and always maintained good relationships here, so people were really excited about him getting in," Orangeburg County Democratic Party Chairman Kenneth Glover told the paper.

Biden is the preferred primary candidate for 46% of likely South Carolina Democratic primary voters, leading runner-up Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., (15%) and Sen. Kamala Harris (10%).

"He's not in the scary wing of the party," Furman University's Danielle Vinson told the paper.

Among the other top Democratic primary vote-getters:

  • South Bend, Indian Mayor Peter Buttigieg 8%.
  • Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., 8%.
  • Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., 4%.
  • Former Rep. Beto O'Rourke, D-Texas, 2%.
  • Entrepreneur Andrew Yang 2%.
  • Former Georgia House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams, D-Ga., 1%.

The poll surveyed 595 likely Democratic primary voters in the state May 6-9, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
