President Donald Trump "acts like he just woke up and is ready to do something" about the closure of the General Motors plant in Lordstown, Ohio, Sen. Sherrod Brown said Tuesday, but he wishes Trump had come to Ohio when the plant's decline began.

"There were almost 5,000 people working when he was elected," the Ohio Democrat told CNN's "New Day." "The third shift laid off after he was elected and the second shift this past summer, and then they were making the Chevy Blazer in Mexico. The last shift was laid off last week."

Brown said he's been talking to the president, who plans a trip to Ohio in the next few days, but he's also been talking to him about the plant for over a year.

Trump over the weekend attacked United Autoworkers Local 1112 President David Green, saying he "ought to get his act together and produce," and said GM "let our country down." but Brown said he's been attacking "everybody" on the shutdown.

"When the second shift was laid off, the president attacked everybody," said Brown, including Republican former Ohio Gov. John Kasich, and "That's what he does."

"We continue to talk to (General Motors CEO) Mary Barra, and we know the president lied about what Mary said when the president said she blamed it on the workers," said Brown. "The workers are efficient."

Trump, meanwhile, has had bad judgment and "has only gotten involved now because he thinks he has to," said Brown. "It's a matter of getting him to focus and do the right things. He should go to Congress and say, pass the American Jobs Act."
